Retirement is the perfect time to travel to all those places you’ve been dying to go all your life. Unfortunately, while you may have unlimited time, you probably don’t have unlimited money. There’s lots of little things you can do to save money on vacation; and if your trip is planned for the summer, you can cut costs by renting a room at a university.
With the students gone and dorm rooms empty for the warmer months, many colleges and universities rent out their facilities during the summer to make an extra buck. This practice isn’t limited to the United States:
Not far from Paris’s Orly Airport, you’ll find lodging at Residence Universitaire Lanteri, Paris for around $65/night. Close to public transportation, breakfast is included as well as the option to purchase additional meals. Laundry facilities, activities room, TV, and internet are included.
By comparison, a quick search on Kayak.com returns that the cheapest (and only!) hotel located within 5 miles of Orly Airport costs $106/night. So if you don’t mind staying in a dorm room, staying at a university could be a good option to save some cash.
